Bermuda’s aviation regulator has suspended the airworthiness certificates of all Russia-operated aircraft on its registry, a crucial requirement for their continued flying under international agreements.
Bermuda is the largest register of Russian planes, followed by Cyprus and Ireland.
The International Civil Aviation Organization, the aviation arm of the United Nations, said on Friday that Russia was trying to require that its airlines register there, but that any airworthiness certificates issued by Russia would be invalid.
Russian carriers operate around 500 aircraft rented from overseas leasing companies, which have said they are concerned the planes could be seized or nationalized.
